With Material Ecology, Oxman has pioneered a field that promotes previously impossible opportunities for design; informing how buildings and products are made and how their shape and material composition may perform in harmony with the ecosystems they inhabit.

Metabolic Engineer [WETWARE]

We are seeking a passionate and creative researcher skilled in synthetic biology and genetic engineering with a passion for design. Research experience implementing gene editing technology (CRISPR-Cas9) is a plus. Individuals with knowledge and skills in chemistry or chemical biology, cell signaling, molecular biology and genetics, plant pathology and plant-microbe interaction are also welcomed to apply. Computational and electrical engineering skills are a plus. The candidate should demonstrate familiarity with metabolic engineering of any model organism and a vision for how insights from one model system can be applied to plant biology. Candidates should demonstrate interest in and familiarity with different forms of metabolic engineering, including but to limited to rational design, evolutionary engineering, inverse design, pathway modification, and transgenics.

Projects included in this job description combine applied science, experimental design and long-term translation of research at the intersection of biology, design and robotics. The position is highly interdisciplinary combining computational, laboratory and mechanical prototyping approaches. Candidates are expected to lead research as part of tight-knit interdisciplinary teams. The candidate should have strong communication skills (verbal, written and visual) and an eye for visuals. Bio-morphogeneticist [SOFTWARE]

We are seeking a computer scientist with experience in modeling biological systems, and an interest in transferring their knowledge the study of plants. This position requires skills ranging from 3D simulations of plant physics, cell simulation and the creation of 3D viewers with specialized graphics engines and customizable user interfaces. Knowledge of theoretical frameworks of emergence and self-organization in developing cell populations through artificial gene regulatory networks combined with evolutionary computation (Artificial Life) is a plus. The candidate ought to exhibit the ability to model intercellular interaction, mechanical forces, differentiation, intercellular communications and growth in the service of studying processes of morphogenetic engineering. Knowledge evolutionary computation and computational biology is advantageous, and the candidate is expected to work closely with plant biologists on the team.

Plant biotechnologist [HARDWARE]

We are seeking a plant biotechnologist who lives and breathes plant design, specifically flower bloom engineering in the context of industrial biotechnology. Successful candidates are expected to exhibit hands-on experimental research proficiency at the interaction of morphogenesis and plant genetics. Of particular significance is an insight into trait development and digital phenotyping in angiosperms. Additionally, skills in identifying and classifying molecular plant promoter sequences to transcriptional functions as modular kit-of-parts for existing or designed functionality, would be key. The candidate should exhibit familiarity with model plants chosen for their speed of growth and an ability to design, engineer, image, grow and maintain these plant cultures as synthetically engineered platforms with high levels of care.

Botanical Illustrator

We are seeking a graphic designer/illustrator who can visualize the composition of a plant in as much detail as an anatomical section of the human body. In addition to the ability to represent scientific systems, the candidate should have experience with the organization of complex datasets as well as with the creation and art direction of editorial and exhibition design. They should demonstrate an extremely minimal, clean, and precise touch and an ability to develop a signature drawing style that aligns with the Oxman philosophy.

As part of a diverse, international, and interdisciplinary team, the candidate will develop a visual language spanning all domains of the Oxman practice. Collaborating closely with other creatives inside the team as well as outside of it, they will create new one-of-a-kind graphic communication tools that are deeply anchored within the output of the company.
